THE MIGHTY KINGFISHER
(115 words)
Bobbing, bobbing,
Up and down.
A quick look in the lake.
Sticklebacks, minnows,
Tadpoles and shrimp.
Tasty morsels ripe to take.
Closing eyelids
For the dive,
A bullet whizzing by.
Grasping the prize
With a firm beak.
Successful on first try.
With fish in bill
He seeks a mate.
He gifts the tasty snack.
If she rejects
The bird’s advance,
She gives the fish right back.
If she accepts,
She eats the fish.
He points his beak up high.
They dig a hole
Along the bank,
Making sure it’s nice and dry.
The eggs soon hatch.
The parents fetch
More fish to feed the chicks.

Soon leave the nest
To practice diving tricks.
